Crayon Rocks - 8 colors

A simple starter set designed for little hands and big imaginations. Crayon Rocks are uniquely shaped soy wax crayons that encourage young children to use the tripod grip—the thumb-and-finger grasp they'll eventually use for pencils and handwriting.

Created by special education teacher Barbara Lee with guidance from occupational therapists, these little pebble-shaped crayons turn an everyday childhood activity into an opportunity to practice fine motor skills through play.

Why Are They Shaped Like Rocks?

The shape is what makes Crayon Rocks different.

Founder Barbara Lee spent years as a special education teacher working with students who struggled with handwriting and fine motor control. Through her work with occupational therapists, she learned how important the tripod grip—using the thumb, index finger, and middle finger—is when children begin learning to write.

Barbara couldn't find a crayon specifically designed around the way those little fingers needed to work.

So she made one.

The compact pebble shape naturally encourages children to pick up and control the crayon with their fingers rather than wrapping their entire hand around a long crayon.
