A family recipe traveled from Malaysia to the Pacific Northwest to become Pan's Mushroom Jerky—a savory, satisfying snack made from shiitake mushrooms and inspired by generations of family food traditions.

Founder Michael Pan discovered the recipe while visiting family in Malaysia in 2006. Many members of his family are vegetarian Buddhists, and during his visit they introduced him to traditional vegetarian dishes featuring mushrooms and other plant-based ingredients. One particular shiitake mushroom snack stood out—and Michael knew it was something he wanted to share.

Back home in the Pacific Northwest, Michael spent years developing and refining his family's recipe before officially launching Pan's Mushroom Jerky in 2018. Today, it's made in Portland, Oregon, with several flavorful varieties to choose from.

Pan's began with a trip to reconnect with family. While visiting Malaysia, Michael discovered not only a recipe but a deeper appreciation for his family's history, traditions, and the creative ways Southeast Asian cuisine uses plant-based ingredients.

After returning home, he continued experimenting with the recipe while working full time as an engineer. Years of testing eventually became Pan's Mushroom Jerky—a way to share a small piece of his family's food tradition with others.
